THE WORLD

with Riccardo Minetti

I expect most people will be familiar with the basic meanings of The World. It is usually seen as a card of completion, with the assumption that we journey in a line from one place – The Magician or The Fool – to another, The World. From small to large, from beginning to end. I wonder if this is actually true.

Perhaps it would be better to see the journey as a circle, and not as a line. This way The World can also be seen as the first step of a journey back; from an ending to a new beginning, from large to small. And rather than being a destination, The World can become the journey itself.

Actually I think that if you want to understand The World, it is important to look past its basic meaning of expansion.

I will borrow from psychology, specifically Urie Bronfenbrenner and his ecological systems theory. Bronfenbrenner described the development of individual personality as the continual interaction of the self with the world. Like concentric spheres, we have our inner being located at the centre.

The world is first the person we are, then family, then friends, then the working environment. We expand, and as we grow, the world becomes our town, our country, our ethnicity, and finally the human race and all living things.

If you look at The World in this way, you will see it as the Arcanum of interconnection and relationship. It is a symbol of our place within the world, and of the place the world has within self.

I don’t believe it is wise to try to further restrict the definition of The World. Each time we look at the card we are looking through a window. Even with the clearest glass and the widest angle, there will always be more.

In the end, we spend our life not trying to understand The World, but living within it, experiencing a little more of it with every breath we take.
